DIY Organizer Tray from Ferrero Rocher box with multiple uses

I think every house has at least one of these empty boxes either holding some knick-knacks or empty without knowing what do with them. I had two of these boxes which I got as a gift from my friends for anniversary and birthday. I used one box as such for organizing my jewelry findings, as the inner plastic thing which holds the chocolates has deeper pockets so it was perfect whereas the other one has shallow and small compartments which is difficult to organize things like findings as it will mix together while handling. But you can still use the plastic sheet as paint palette for mixing paints.Regarding the use of the box, I came up with an idea of using them as organizer trays. These trays are expensive at the store but you can easily make them for fraction of cost you get at the store. These can be used in many areas of the house and I will show you few ideas below. Let's get started on the making.

DIY organizer tray from Ferrero rocker box with multiple uses

Materials Used:
Ferrero rocher box
Felt
Foam board
Craft knife or Utility knife
Ruler and pencil
Paint brush for applying glue(Optional)
Fabric scissors

Step 1: Measure the length and height of the box using the ruler. Add half an inch to the height and cut two pieces of felt to cover the sides of the box. Apply glue to the sides of the box and glue the felt piece starting from the edges of the box so that no plastic is seen.

Step 2: Measure the width of the box and cut the felt for few inches. Repeat the same process as the step 1. Apply glue using the paint brush for few inches, glue the felt and smooth the area to be free of wrinkles then repeat the process. Make sure you start gluing the felt from the edges of the box as said in step 1.When the other edge is reached, cut the excess felt using fabric scissors.

Step 3: Next is to plan on the compartments and cut the dividers from foam board accordingly. Start with one compartment and go from there or make your plan on a sheet of paper and work it out.

I have planned on using this tray for organizing my sewing kit which includes threads, bobbins, sewing machine tools, spare needles, various pressure foots, measuring tape, etc. First I measured the height and length of the box and made two dividers for either side of the box for storing bobbins.I then built my dividers measuring the areas available and making sure what I need to store fits in there.

Once the dividers are cut, I made sure all the materials I need to store fits in the respective compartments.

Step 4: Cover the foam board dividers with felt. Apply glue on one side of the foam board, glue it to the felt, then apply glue to the other two sides and carefully roll the foam board so that the felt fits snuggle to the board. Cut the excess using fabric scissors. Repeat the same for all the dividers.

Step 5: Glue the dividers to the tray. Apply glue to the bottom of the dividers using the paint brush and glue them to the tray. To make sure I am not messing up the sizes of the compartment, I placed the things I am storing, sidesfor example, I placed the four bobbins on eisideof the box and then glued the dividers so that I made sure the bobbins fits perfectly.

When gluing the middle(width-wise) dividers, I placed the thread spools on the top and bottom and then glued the compartments. When gluing the lengthwise dividers for the middle compartments, I placed couple of tools in the middle and then glued the lengthwise dividers. Once, all the dividers are glued in its place, the tray is ready to organize.

If you are using these as trays, you can use the cover of the box as another tray, as I am using this as a sewing kit, I covered the front labels using vinyl.

You can also use these as drawer organizers for organizing your planner supplies, stationery or office supplies, etc.  If you make the dividers fit snuggle you can avoid gluing them to the base and even move the dividers when the contents of your tray change.

These can also be used as perfect organizer trays for your jewelry. To make the earrings/ring holder compartment, first make the compartment as discussed above, then measure the width of the compartment and cut a piece of felt with that measurement. Roll the felt tightly and stop when you reach the size you want.Cut the excess, cut few pieces of felt with the same length and width to cover the compartment. Repeat the same step of rolling each piece of felt. Glue the edges and glue each piece to the compartment till it gets filled. Your earrings/ring holder is ready.

I love how this project turned out. I hope you give this idea a try.If you were me, for what purpose you will use these trays? I had this second box sitting empty for almost two years and I am happy that I finally got around to it and found a use. I was using glass jars for storing my threads and bobbins, as my collections started to grow I found it difficult to see the colors I have so I came up with this solution and I am happy how this turned out.

The glue actually dries clear but some streaks are visible. It doesn't bother me much but if it bothers you, cover the top with a painter's tape and give a coat or two of spray paint to the outside of the box. The other thing about this project is that I already had all the materials to make this tray at home, the black felt was the left over from my Cereal box pencil case DIY, foam board was the left over from Navaratri festival and I already had glue. So this turned out to be a simple and perfect organizing project me. I hope it will be perfect for you too. If you are buying felt for this project I recommend getting them in yards rather than sheets as it will save you money and also you will get larger length and width to cover the box. I will stop here so that you can go search for the empty Ferrero Rocher boxes that you saved a long time and start organizing in style.

Share what you think in the comments below. As always I will be happy to hear from you.
